Lift a barbell straight out in front of you from thigh level to about shoulder height, primarily working the anterior deltoids. Perform controlled repetitions with a stable torso and braced core.
How to do the Front Raise (Barbell)#
- Stand feet shoulder-width apart and hold the barbell in front of your thighs with an overhand grip about shoulder-width apart.
- Brace your core and keep a neutral spine with a slight bend in the elbows.
- Raise the barbell straight forward until it reaches shoulder level, exhaling as you lift.
- Hold briefly at the top without shrugging or leaning back.
- Lower the bar slowly to the start while inhaling and maintain control.
Muscles worked#
- Primary: Front delts
- Secondary: Chest, Traps
Common mistakes#
- Using torso momentum or swinging the body.
- Lifting the bar above shoulder level.
- Allowing the lower back to arch.
- Shrugging the shoulders at the top.
- Bending the wrists instead of keeping them neutral.
