What counts as lean body mass#

Lean body mass is everything that is not fat: muscle, bone, organs, skin, and water. It is not the same as muscle mass — muscle is the largest changeable part of it, but organs and bone contribute a fixed share. When your lean mass trends up over months of training while body fat holds steady, that trend is muscle growth.

Two ways to estimate it#

If you know your body fat percentage, lean mass is simple arithmetic: weight × (1 − body fat). That is the most accurate option here — measure it with the Navy tape method if you have a tape measure. Without a body fat number, the Boer, James, and Hume formulas estimate lean mass from height, weight, and sex. Boer is generally considered the most reliable of the three and is the one used in clinical settings; the spread between the formulas is a fair indication of the uncertainty involved.

Frequently asked questions#

What is lean body mass?#

Lean body mass is your total weight minus fat mass — muscle, bone, organs, skin, and water. Muscle is the largest part you can change, so a rising lean mass trend over months of training reflects muscle growth.

How do I calculate lean body mass?#

If you know your body fat percentage: weight × (1 − body fat ÷ 100). Without it, the Boer, James, and Hume formulas estimate LBM from height, weight, and sex; Boer is generally considered the most reliable and is used clinically.

What is a normal lean body mass percentage?#

For men, lean mass is typically 75–90% of bodyweight (body fat 10–25%); for women, 68–85% (body fat 15–32%). Trained lifters sit at the higher end. The percentage moves with both training and body fat changes.

What is the difference between lean body mass and muscle mass?#

Muscle is only part of lean mass — bone, organs, and water make up the rest. Two people with equal lean mass can carry different amounts of muscle, which is why lifters also track FFMI and strength trends rather than lean mass alone.
