Step out to the side and lower into a side squat, using a single-leg-dominant push to work the quadriceps while the hamstrings and glutes assist. The movement shifts weight laterally and returns to center between reps.
How to do the Lateral Squat#
- Stand with feet wider than hip-width and toes facing forward or slightly outward.
- Shift your weight onto one leg and push your hips back while bending the knee of the working leg.
- Keep the working knee tracking over your toes and your chest upright as you lower to a comfortable depth.
- Drive through the heel of the working foot to return to standing and bring your feet back to center.
- Repeat for the prescribed reps on one side, then switch sides.
Muscles worked#
Common mistakes#
- Letting the working knee collapse inward.
- Rising up onto the toes instead of keeping the heel down.
- Bending forward at the waist instead of hinging at the hips.
- Allowing the non-working leg to carry the load by bending it deeply.
