Execute a squat directly into an overhead press with kettlebells, using hip extension to drive the weights overhead. The movement engages the legs and shoulders and requires strong core stabilization.
How to do the Thruster (Kettlebell)#
- Hold a kettlebell in each hand at the rack position against your forearms with feet about hip-width apart.
- Brace your core, push your hips back, and descend into a squat until your thighs are slightly below parallel.
- Explode upward by extending your hips and knees to generate upward momentum.
- As you stand, press the kettlebells overhead to full arm extension, using the hip drive to assist the press.
- Lower the kettlebells back to the rack position under control and prepare for the next repetition.
Muscles worked#
- Primary: Quads, Glutes, Front delts
- Secondary: Triceps, Side delts, Hamstrings, Abs, Upper back
Common mistakes#
- Using the arms to lift the kettlebells instead of driving with the hips.
- Allowing the knees to cave inward during the squat.
- Rising onto the toes rather than keeping weight through the heels and midfoot.
- Not bracing the core, which causes excessive forward lean.
