A narrow-hand bodyweight press where you lower and push your torso from the floor, placing primary load on the triceps while the chest and shoulders assist.
How to do the Push Up (Close Grip)#
- Begin in a high plank with your hands positioned closer than shoulder width directly under your chest.
- Brace your core and glutes to keep a straight line from head to heels throughout the movement.
- Tuck your elbows close to your sides and bend them to lower your chest toward your hands until it comes near the floor.
- Pause briefly at the bottom, then press through your palms to extend your arms and return to the start position.
- Keep a neutral neck and controlled tempo; inhale as you lower and exhale as you push up.
Muscles worked#
- Primary: Triceps, Chest
- Secondary: Front delts, Abs
Common mistakes#
- Hips sag or rise, breaking a straight plank line.
- Elbows flare wide away from the torso.
- Hands sit too far forward instead of under the chest.
- Not lowering far enough, reducing triceps engagement.
