A push-up variation that lowers your chest and then shifts your weight laterally at the bottom, using horizontal pressing to primarily work the chest.
How to do the Push Up (Typewriter)#
- Begin in a high plank with a straight line from head to heels and hands positioned near chest level.
- Bend both elbows and lower your chest toward the floor until you reach the bottom of a push-up.
- Hold the bottom position and shift your body weight over one hand, moving your chest laterally across toward the opposite hand in a controlled motion.
- Push back up to the starting plank while maintaining alignment, then repeat the descent and shift to the other side on the next rep.
Muscles worked#
- Primary: Chest, Triceps, Front delts
- Secondary: Abs, Obliques
Common mistakes#
- Letting the hips droop or lift out of line
- Twisting the torso instead of translating the chest side-to-side
- Rushing the lateral shift and losing control
- Flaring the elbows excessively during the descent
