RPE — rate of perceived exertion — is how experienced lifters describe effort: a 6-to-10 scale where the number tells you how close a set came to failure. It looks subjective, and early on it is. But once calibrated, it's the most useful single number you can attach to a set, because it lets your training adjust to how strong you actually are today. This guide covers the full RPE chart, how it maps to reps in reserve, how to calibrate your ratings, and how to program with it.
What RPE is#
The scale was borrowed from endurance science (the Borg scale) and adapted for lifting by powerlifter Mike Tuchscherer, who anchored it to a concrete question: how many more reps could you have done? An RPE 10 set means zero reps left. RPE 8 means two clean reps left in the tank. Anything below 6 is so far from failure that the distinction stops mattering, which is why the lifting scale effectively runs from 6 to 10, in half-point steps.
The RPE chart#

RPE vs RIR: same information, opposite directions#
RIR — reps in reserve — counts up from failure instead of down: RIR 0 is RPE 10, RIR 2 is RPE 8, RIR 4 is RPE 6. There is no practical difference; it's the same measurement read from the other end. Powerlifting programs tend to prescribe RPE, hypertrophy programs tend to prescribe RIR (“3 sets at 2 RIR”), and you should use whichever one you can answer honestly ten seconds after racking the bar. Why lifters use RPE: autoregulation#
Percentage-based programs assume you are the same lifter every day. You aren't. After bad sleep, a hard week at work, or two days of low food, the same 80% of your one-rep max can feel like 90% — and on a great day it feels like 72%. A percentage prescription can't see any of that; an RPE prescription can. “Work up to a heavy set of 5 at RPE 8” automatically becomes lighter on bad days and heavier on good ones, which means you accumulate productive training on both instead of grinding when you should back off and sandbagging when you could push. That self-adjustment is called autoregulation, and it's the entire reason the scale earned a permanent place in strength programs.
How to calibrate your ratings#
Beginners systematically misjudge effort — usually rating sets much harder than they are, stopping at “RPE 9” with four reps left. Calibration is a skill, and three practices build it fast:
Film your sets#
Bar speed doesn't lie. A true RPE 9 shows a clear slowdown on the final rep; if your “RPE 9” looks as fast as your warm-ups, you rated it wrong. Reviewing video against your logged ratings tightens the connection between feel and reality.
Occasionally take a set to failure#
On a safe exercise — machine work, dumbbell pressing, leg press — periodically push a set until you genuinely cannot complete a rep. Knowing what RPE 10 actually feels like re-anchors every rating below it. Most lifters discover their ceiling is further away than they thought.
Compare estimated vs actual reps#
When a set feels like RPE 8, you're predicting two more reps. Sometimes, test the prediction: do the extra reps and count. You can also sanity-check ratings against math — a set of 5 at a weight that's 85% of your estimated 1RM should be near RPE 9, and the percentage chart shows what rep counts to expect at each load.
How to program with RPE#
A typical RPE prescription for a main lift looks like this:
- Top set: work up to one set of 5 at RPE 8 — heavy, two reps in reserve.
- Back-off sets: drop 5–10% and perform 3×5 at RPE 7, accumulating volume without grinding.
The structure holds across rep ranges: hypertrophy work might run 3 sets of 10 at RPE 7–8, peaking work might take singles at RPE 9. Effort caps also stack cleanly on top of progressive overload — add reps or weight session to session, but only while the prescribed RPE holds, so the effort rises deliberately instead of drifting to failure.
When percentages beat RPE#
If you can't yet rate effort within a rep or two, RPE prescriptions are noise. Beginners fall squarely here — and conveniently, they don't need autoregulation: on a linear program like 5×5, the prescription is simply “add 2.5 kg and do your five reps.” Fixed weights and percentages are also better for technique work, where the point is practicing at a controlled load, not chasing a feel. Run fixed loading first, log RPE passively alongside it, and switch to RPE-driven programming once your ratings match reality.
Log it per set, or don't bother#
RPE is only useful written down next to the weight and reps it describes. “100 kg × 5 @ RPE 7” and “100 kg × 5 @ RPE 9.5” are the same set in a bare log and completely different training realities. Logged per set, RPE turns your history into context: you can see a lift getting easier at the same weight before the weight ever changes, and spot fatigue building when ratings creep up week over week.
