What a Wilks score means#

The Wilks coefficient turns your powerlifting total into a bodyweight-adjusted score so lifters in different weight classes can be compared directly. It was the standard formula in powerlifting for over two decades, and “a 400 Wilks” is still shorthand for a serious lifter in most gyms.

Rough Wilks benchmarks#

WilksLevel
200Novice — first year of structured training
300Intermediate — stronger than most gym members
400Advanced — competitive at local and national meets
500Elite
600+World class

Wilks vs DOTS#

Research showed the original Wilks coefficients systematically favored certain bodyweights, so most federations replaced it with DOTS, which uses updated coefficients on the same idea. Your DOTS score is shown alongside your Wilks above; for new comparisons and most modern competitions, DOTS is the number to quote. The DOTS calculator lets you enter squat, bench, and deadlift separately.

Methodology#

Wilks is total × 500 ÷ P(bodyweight), where P is the original fifth-degree polynomial with published coefficients for men and women, computed on kilograms. Pound inputs are converted before scoring. No competition total? Estimate your lifts from rep work with the one rep max calculator.

Gript tracks your squat, bench, and deadlift PRs automatically from your logged workouts — so the total behind your score is always current.

Frequently asked questions#

What is a Wilks score?

Wilks is a coefficient that adjusts your powerlifting total for bodyweight, so lifters in different weight classes can be compared with one number. It multiplies your total by a value derived from a fifth-degree polynomial of your bodyweight, with separate coefficients for men and women.

What is a good Wilks score?

Roughly: 200 is a novice, 300 is a solid intermediate, 400 is advanced and competitive at meets, 500 is elite, and 600+ is world class. The same rough bands apply to DOTS scores.

Why did federations replace Wilks with DOTS?

Analyses showed the original Wilks coefficients systematically favored some bodyweight ranges over others. DOTS applies the same idea with updated coefficients and is what most federations use today. Wilks remains widely quoted, which is why this calculator shows both.

Can I calculate Wilks for a single lift?

Yes — the formula works on any weight, so scoring a single lift is common for comparing one movement between lifters. Just compare like with like: single-lift scores against single-lift scores, totals against totals.
