Comparing RP Hypertrophy vs MacroFactor Workouts vs Gript
RP Hypertrophy and MacroFactor Workouts come from two evidence-based names in lifting, Renaissance Periodization and Stronger By Science, and they sell different things. RP sells the program: pick a mesocycle, report pump, soreness, and workload, and the app sets next week’s weights and reps. MacroFactor Workouts sells the log: RIR on every set, myo-reps, per-side loads, and a rule-based Smart Progression inside your program. Gript is the third column because it is ours: a free-first log that suggests the next weight or reps on any routine and shows the reason. Here is an honest look at all three, with facts taken from each app’s own help center and store listing.
What sets RP Hypertrophy vs MacroFactor Workouts vs Gript apart
RP Hypertrophy is a mesocycle coach, not a general log. Choose one of 45 or more templates or build your own in the Meso Builder, and the app prescribes every set with an RIR target, then auto-regulates the next week from your feedback. It is priced like coaching: $34.99 a month or $299.99 a year, no free tier, no trial. The native iPhone app only arrived on 21 December 2025, so it carries 232 US ratings at 4.3 and 143 Play reviews at 4.4, a small footprint for a brand this large.
MacroFactor Workouts, launched in January 2026, is the deepest pure log here. It records RIR, myo-reps, partials, and per-side loads, generates or imports a periodized program, and Smart Progression suggests each set from your logged performance and RIR target. It costs $11.99 a month or $71.99 a year after a 7-day trial, with no free tier and no Apple Watch app.
Gript is the free-first option. Unlimited logging, 3 routines, and 12 weeks of charts cost nothing; Pro at $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year unlocks progression suggestions on any routine, with the first 5 free. Its engine works set by set from previous sets, rep range, and effort, so it has no mesocycle, periodization, or deload scheduling.
How RP Hypertrophy stands out
If you want to be coached through a hypertrophy block rather than log one, RP Hypertrophy provides:
- A mesocycle that prescribes every set. Week-by-week weight and rep targets with RIR built in, auto-regulated from the pump, soreness, and workload you report. Neither of the other two adjusts a whole block this way.
- 45 or more templates plus a Meso Builder. Premade mesocycles for common splits, or a custom builder for your own exercise selection, backed by 250 or more technique videos.
- A web app alongside the phones. iPhone, Android, and training.rpstrength.com. No iPad-native app, no Apple Watch, no Apple Health.
- No export, no import, no free tier. $34.99 a month, $299.99 a year, or a 6-month term, with no trial found. Nothing leaves the app as a file, and no history comes in.
How MacroFactor Workouts stands out
If you want the deepest log with progression that respects your program, MacroFactor Workouts provides:
- RIR, myo-reps, partials, and per-side loads. Every set carries an RIR on a 0 to 6 scale, with partials and left-right loads logged separately. RP prescribes RIR too, but only within its mesocycle.
- Smart Progression inside a periodized plan. Pre-fills the next set from logged performance, RIR target, and rep range, with periodization and deloads in the generated program. It suggests inside the structure rather than rewriting the block.
- A gym-aware toolkit. Gym inventory drives the plate calculator and generator, a Live Activity runs the rest timer, and you can log freestyle off program.
- A third of RP’s price, still no free tier. $11.99 a month, $47.99 per half year, or $71.99 a year after a 7-day trial, or $89.99 a year bundled with MacroFactor nutrition. iPhone, iPad, and Android; no Watch, no web, no history import.
How Gript stands out
If you want a free log that tells you the next weight on your own routine, Gript provides:
- Set-level suggestions with the reason shown. On any routine you built or imported, Pro suggests the next weight or reps from your previous sets, rep range, and effort, and the badge explains why. The first 5 are free. See progression suggestions.
- RPE or RIR, and PRs detected. One-tap effort on the workout keyboard, new records highlighted after the workout, and 9 per-exercise plus 10 training-wide charts, 12 weeks free.
- Any written program becomes a routine. AI import reads a program from text, PDF, or a screenshot, and history imports from 19 apps with an exercise matching step. Neither RP nor MacroFactor Workouts exports history.
- The only Apple Watch app of the three. iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Android, plus Apple Health both ways. No mesocycle or deload engine, no myo-reps or per-side loads, no web app.
Common questions
How much is the RP Hypertrophy app?
$34.99 a month or $299.99 a year, which RP quotes as $24.99 a month billed yearly; a 6-month term is also sold. No free tier, no free trial. MacroFactor Workouts is $11.99 a month or $71.99 a year after a 7-day trial; Gript Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year on top of a free tier.
Is there a free RP Hypertrophy alternative?
Not a like-for-like one. MacroFactor Workouts has no free tier either. Gript logs for free without limits and shows your first 5 progression suggestions before Pro, and an RP program can be pasted into Gript through text import as a routine you run yourself. You get the exercises, sets, and rep ranges, not RP’s week-to-week auto-regulation.
Does the RP Hypertrophy app have an Apple Watch app?
No. RP Hypertrophy runs on iPhone, Android, and the web, and is not iPad-native. MacroFactor Workouts has no Watch app either. Gript has an Apple Watch companion with an offline queue and complications.
Final verdict: which one should you choose?
- Choose RP Hypertrophy if
RP Hypertrophyyou want to be coached: a mesocycle written for you, every set prescribed, next week adjusted from your feedback, and $299.99 a year is worth not having to think about it.
- Choose MacroFactor Workouts if
MacroFactor Workoutsyou log RIR, myo-reps, or unilateral work, want a periodized program with Smart Progression inside it, and prefer a full log you can also use freestyle.
- Choose Gript if
Griptyou already have a routine and want a free log with set-level suggestions and their reasons, an Apple Watch app, and the lowest price.
The three sit on a line from coach to log. RP Hypertrophy owns the program and tells you what to do; MacroFactor Workouts logs the most and suggests within your plan; Gript logs for free and suggests the next set on whatever you already run. If you want to be told, pick RP. If you want a free start and a reason behind each number, Gript is there.

I have tried pretty much every workout tracker out there — Hevy, Strong and many others — and Gript has quickly become my favorite. The UI and overall design are easily the best on the market.
