Comparing Liftoff app review

Liftoff is the ranked workout app from Liftoff Labs Inc., formerly GymBros, not the energy drink, the drone simulator, or the ad platform that share the name. It launched on iOS in 2023, holds a 4.8 on the US App Store from 97,000 ratings and on Google Play from 91,000 reviews, and its site claims 4 million lifters. Gript is the second column because it is ours. Here is an honest look at it, with facts taken from the app’s own FAQ, site, and store listings.

What sets Liftoff app review apart

Liftoff is a log wrapped in a ranked game. Each set feeds an estimated 1RM, which becomes a strength rating from 1 to 1000 adjusted for body weight and sex, which places you in one of nine ranks from Wood to Olympian. Streaks break after three days without a post, seasons reset every four months, and friends, country, and world leaderboards keep score. The game is free; Pro runs from $3.99 to $14.99 a month or $39.99 to $79.99 a year for AI features and deeper analytics.

Gript is for a lifter who wants the same sets read as progress instead of a score: PR detection with a Personal Records screen, 19 charts with 12 weeks free, progression suggestions with reasons, and history import from 19 apps. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Android, with no ranks, streaks, feed, or web app. It cannot import from Liftoff, because Liftoff has no documented export.

How Liftoff stands out

If you want a score to chase and a reason not to skip, Liftoff provides:

  • Ranks on 500+ exercises, free. Roughly 600 exercises, with ranks on 500 or more of them. The rating runs 1 to 1000 from estimated 1RM, adjusted for body weight and sex, across Wood, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion, Titan, and Olympian, each with 0 to 100 LP. Rank and streak widgets sit on the home screen.
  • Streaks, and a restore economy. A streak breaks after three days without a post; a posted rest day protects it. Broken streaks come back with Super Restore (up to 30 days), Mega Restore (up to 60 days), or Streak Revive, all bought with eggs, the in-app currency. Budget for it if the streak matters to you.
  • Seasons and leaderboards. Seasons reset on 1 January, 1 May, and 1 September, with leaderboards by friends, country, and world. Workout plans in the shop are unlocked with eggs or bundles; the count is not published.
  • Pro for the AI and long charts. Calorie Lens food scanning, barcode scanning, an AI workout and multi-week plan generator, deeper analytics, and long-timeframe charts. The App Store lists $3.99, $12.99, and $14.99 a month and $39.99 and $79.99 a year without labelling the plans, an optional trial, and no lifetime.
  • Apple Watch since September 2026. iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch on watchOS 10 or later, and Android, with a Live Activity rest timer, 17 body measurements, Apple Health, Strava, and CSV import from Strong and Hevy. No Wear OS, no web app, and no documented export.

How Gript stands out

If you would rather see the lift move than watch a rank, Gript provides:

  • PR detection and a Personal Records screen. New records highlighted on the completion screen, in history, and on share cards, with a history chart per record. See personal records.
  • 19 chart templates, 12 weeks free. Nine per exercise, including estimated 1RM, working weight range, and a weight-versus-reps scatter, plus 10 training-wide charts. Longer ranges are Pro. See chart types.
  • Progression suggestions with reasons. The next weight or rep target on any routine you built, with the reason shown; the first 5 are free. See progression suggestions.
  • Import from 19 apps, not Liftoff. Hevy, Strong, Fitbod, JEFIT, and 15 more via exercise matching, and AI import reads a spreadsheet or screenshot. Liftoff has no documented export, so a Liftoff history cannot be moved today. Export from Gript is free.
  • No game, no feed, no web. iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Android, no Wear OS. Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year with a free trial and no lifetime plan.

Common questions

Is the Liftoff app free?

Yes. Logging, ranks on 500 or more of its roughly 600 exercises, streaks, and leaderboards are free. Pro adds Calorie Lens food scanning, barcode scanning, the AI workout and multi-week plan generator, deeper analytics, and long-timeframe charts. Streak restores are bought separately with eggs.

How much does Liftoff Pro cost?

The US App Store lists $3.99, $12.99, and $14.99 a month and $39.99 and $79.99 a year without labelling which plan each belongs to, so check the paywall in the app before you buy. There is an optional trial of unpublished length and no lifetime plan. Gript Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

Does Liftoff have an Apple Watch app?

Yes, since September 2026, on watchOS 10 or later, alongside iPhone, iPad, and Android. There is no Wear OS app and no web app; liftoffrank.com is a download page.

Final verdict: which one should you choose?

  • Choose Liftoff ifLiftoff

you train harder with a rank to climb, a streak to keep, and friends on a leaderboard, and you are fine with the history staying in one app.

  • Choose Gript ifGript

you want the same sets read as PRs, charts, and next-weight suggestions, without a score or a streak to restore.

Liftoff is a good logger with a game on top: the ranks are grounded in estimated 1RM and body weight, the free tier is generous, and the September 2026 Watch app fills the biggest platform gap. The costs are the restore economy, a Pro price list the store does not explain, and a history with no documented way out. If that last point matters, start in an app that exports.

I have tried pretty much every workout tracker out there — Hevy, Strong and many others — and Gript has quickly become my favorite. The UI and overall design are easily the best on the market.
