Comparing Hevy review

Hevy is one of the two workout trackers most lifters start with. It has 90,934 US App Store ratings at 4.92 on version 3.1.12, claims more than 16 million athletes, and is free with no ads. Pro is $2.99 a month, $23.99 a year, or $74.99 for life, the lowest price compared here. Gript is the second column because it is ours. Here is an honest look at it, with facts taken from each app’s own help center and App Store listing.

What sets Hevy review apart

Hevy is a log with a community around it. The home tab is a feed of your friends’ workouts, the library holds 26 programs, and it runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, Wear OS, and the web. Logging is free and unlimited; the caps are 4 routines, 7 custom exercises, and 3 months of charts. Nothing plans workouts on a calendar.

Gript is for a lifter on iPhone who wants to see progress rather than post it: nine chart types on 12 weeks free, body measurements free for every body part, free CSV export, and a direct import of the Hevy CSV. It has no Android app, web app, widgets, or social feed.

How Hevy stands out

If you want the most app for free and people to train alongside, Hevy provides:

  • Free logging with history that stays. Workouts are never deleted, and if Pro lapses the routines above the cap stay usable. Set types, supersets, RPE, rest timers, the plate calculator, live PR banner, and Monthly Report are free.
  • A social layer nobody else has. A feed of workouts from people you follow, likes and comments, a Discover view, profile comparison, leaderboards on 38 barbell exercises, and one-way Strava sync. Accounts and workouts can be private.
  • 26 programs, HevyGPT, and Hevy Trainer. 8 beginner, 10 intermediate, and 8 advanced programs plus 8 routine categories. HevyGPT builds a plan in ChatGPT for free within the 4-routine cap; Trainer (Pro) generates a program and adjusts your working weights.
  • Every platform. iPhone on iOS 15.1 or later, a fully featured iPad app, Apple Watch with live sync and complications, Android, Wear OS, hevy.com, interactive widgets, and 16 languages. Garmin is not supported.
  • Pro at $23.99 a year. Or $2.99 a month or $74.99 for life, for unlimited routines and custom exercises, all-time charts, every measurement, sets per muscle group, the warm-up calculator, and Trainer. No free trial; occasional half-price first-year sales.

How Gript stands out

If you want to see more of your training for free and keep your Hevy history, Gript provides:

  • Nine chart types, 12 weeks free. Volume, estimated 1RM, working weight range, and a weight-versus-reps scatter per exercise, plus a body map, muscle balance radar, and training load heatmap. Hevy charts five metrics; longer ranges are Pro. See chart types.
  • Body measurements free for every part. With goals, left and right comparison, and two-way Apple Health sync. Hevy limits free users to weight and waist and puts the rest behind Pro.
  • Your Hevy history comes with you. The Hevy workouts CSV imports directly with an exercise matching step, keeping set types, RPE, and supersets; see import from Hevy. Export back out is free in Gript, Strong, or Hevy format.
  • Progression suggestions on any routine. The next weight and the reason it was chosen, on routines you built yourself (Pro). Hevy Trainer does this only inside its own programs.
  • No Android, feed, or lifetime price. iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch only, with Android on a waitlist. No social layer, web app, widgets, or monthly report, and 6 programs against Hevy’s 26. Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year.

Common questions

Is Hevy free?

Yes. Hevy is free to download, has no ads, and logs unlimited workouts with full history. The caps are 4 routines, 7 custom exercises, 3 months of chart history, and weight plus waist as the only measurements. The warm-up calculator, sets per muscle group, and Hevy Trainer need Pro.

Is Hevy Pro worth it?

At $2.99 a month, $23.99 a year, or $74.99 for life, Pro is the cheapest paid tier compared here. It is worth it if your program has more than four routines, you want charts past 3 months or measurements beyond weight and waist, or you want Trainer. Otherwise free is enough.

Can I export my Hevy data?

Yes, free on every tier. Hevy exports a workouts CSV and a separate measurements CSV from Profile, Settings, Export and Import Data. Import is narrower: a Strong-format CSV only, once per account. See how to export from Hevy.

Final verdict: which one should you choose?

  • Choose Hevy ifHevy

you want a social feed, the biggest free tier, a large program library, Android, Wear OS, or a web app, or the lowest price including a lifetime plan.

  • Choose Gript ifGript

you log on iPhone and would rather have nine chart types and every body measurement free than a feed, keeping your Hevy history. Not for you if you need Android today; the waitlist is here.

Hevy is a very good tracker and the easiest recommendation for anyone asking where to start: fast logging, an honest free tier, the deepest program library, and every platform. Its gaps are chart depth, measurements behind Pro, and no calendar planning. If those matter more than the feed, see switching from Hevy.

I have tried pretty much every workout tracker out there — Hevy, Strong and many others — and Gript has quickly become my favorite. The UI and overall design are easily the best on the market.
