Perform a staggered-stance squat inside a Smith machine, lowering on one leg to load the quadriceps and glutes. The movement emphasizes a controlled descent and drive through the front heel to return upright.
How to do the Split Squat (Smith Machine)#
- Set the Smith machine bar at about shoulder height and position it across your upper back, then load a suitable weight and secure the safety stops.
- Step one foot forward and place the other foot behind you in a split stance, keeping most of your weight on the front leg.
- Unlock the bar, brace your core, and keep your chest tall as you bend the front knee to lower until the front thigh is roughly parallel to the floor.
- Drive through the front heel to extend the knee and return to the starting position with hips square and torso upright.
- Carefully rack the bar before changing stance or switching legs, and repeat for the desired reps.
Muscles worked#
- Primary: Quads (Quadriceps Femoris), Glutes (Gluteus Maximus)
- Secondary: Hamstrings (Biceps Femoris, Semitendinosus & Semimembranosus), Adductors (Adductor Magnus, Longus & Brevis (Hip Adductors)), Calves (Gastrocnemius & Soleus)
Common mistakes#
- Letting the front knee collapse inward or drift excessively over the toes.
- Loading the rear foot instead of keeping weight on the front heel.
- Leaning the torso forward and losing an upright chest.
- Resting the bar too high on the neck instead of across the upper back.
