Machine Crunch

Also known as: Crunch (Machine)

Sit on the leverage crunch machine and flex your spine to curl the torso toward the hips. The movement primarily engages the abdominal muscles.

How to do the Machine Crunch#

  1. Adjust the seat so your arms bend about 90° and your triceps rest comfortably on the machine pads.
  2. Grasp the handle with a firm grip and keep your legs relaxed.
  3. Exhale and contract your abs to curl the weight, bringing your torso forward while allowing the legs to move slightly closer to your upper body.
  4. Hold the top position briefly while maintaining tension in your abdominals.
  5. Inhale and slowly lower the weight back to the starting position under control.

Frequently asked questions#

What muscles does the Machine Crunch work?

The Machine Crunch primarily works the abs. The obliques assist as secondary muscles — they stabilise the movement and take over when the main target fatigues. If you feel it mostly in the obliques, lighten the load and slow the lowering phase.

What equipment do I need for the Machine Crunch?

The Machine Crunch needs the following: Machine. Nothing beyond that is required to run the movement as described above.

Is the Machine Crunch suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Machine Crunch is rated beginner: the technique is quick to pick up and forgiving when a rep goes slightly off. Start light and add weight once the form repeats itself without you thinking about it.

What are good alternatives to the Machine Crunch?

Ab Coaster, Ab Wheel, Air Bike all train the same primary muscles as the Machine Crunch. Pick whichever one matches the equipment in front of you.
