Explosively extend the hips and knees to jump while shrugging a loaded barbell, emphasizing leg power and drive.
How to do the Jump Shrug (Barbell)#
- Stand with the bar over your mid-foot and your feet about hip-width apart.
- Hinge at the hips and bend the knees to grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width while keeping your torso rigid.
- Drive through your legs to extend hips and knees and pull the bar upward.
- When the bar passes mid-thigh, jump vertically and forcefully shrug the bar with your shoulders.
- Land softly with bent knees and lower the bar back to the floor under control by reversing the motion.
Muscles worked#
- Primary: Traps, Glutes, Quads
- Secondary: Calves, Hamstrings, Lower back, Forearms
Common mistakes#
- Allowing the lower back to round at setup.
- Pulling with the arms instead of using hip and knee extension.
- Jumping before achieving full hip and knee drive.
- Landing with stiff legs instead of absorbing the impact.
