A standing horizontal pressing movement using cables that drives the hands forward to work the chest (pectoralis major).
How to do the Standing Chest Press (Cable)#
- Set both pulleys to about chest height and grasp a handle in each hand, then step forward into a staggered stance so there is tension in the cables.
- Brace your core and pull your shoulder blades slightly down and together to stabilize the thorax.
- Press the handles straight forward until your arms are almost extended, keeping a small bend in the elbows.
- Pause briefly at full extension, then control the handles back to the start until your elbows return near chest level.
- Keep your torso steady and avoid rotating or leaning excessively; move deliberately on both the concentric and eccentric phases.
Muscles worked#
- Primary: Chest (Pectoralis Major)
- Secondary: Front delts (Anterior Deltoid), Triceps (Triceps Brachii), Abs (Rectus Abdominis), Obliques (External & Internal Obliques)
Common mistakes#
- Leaning the torso forward and using hip drive to push the weight.
- Shrugging or letting the shoulders rise toward the ears during the press.
- Rushing the return and allowing the cables to snap you back instead of controlling the eccentric.
